Bonus Characters:

These characters are -NOT- a part of the story mode and do not appear in any scenes or extras included in the game.  Consider them the game’s equivalent of DLC, maybe? This is to keep the roster at a semi-realistic size while still allowing for more characters to appear.

Vinny (Atlantis)

Stinky Pete (Toy Story)

Iron Man (Marvel) [THIRD PARTY]

Darth Vader (Star Wars) [THIRD PARTY]

CUT:

Minnie Mouse (Mickey alternate now, no loss here)

Sheriff of Nottingham (This one ranked up there on the possible cuts poll, and I can see why. At the end of the day, there’s really nothing to distinguish him from Frollo. Swords and torches. Besides, a lackluster movie really shouldn’t be getting two characters.)

Hitchhiking Ghosts (Also a popular cut idea, as fun as it would be to see a ghostly fighter(s), I can’t help but agree these guys should probably go.)

Queen of Hearts (I love this character and would love to see her playable, however, her being in-game means that Alice is the only movie with 3 slots and that doesn’t work. Cheshire would have a more interesting illusion-based set while the Queen has summon-commanding, which most characters on here do.)

ADDING:

Jack Sparrow (Kind of a no-brainer at this point, could realistically fit in the 2D game world and technically rep the theme park slot that the ghosts left open)

Sully and Mike (Not sure what to do here with them, but it’d be fun to see how they could work)

Cheshire Cat (Popular choice on the poll and could very well lend himself to a fun and interesting moveset)

  1. You guys ever gonna finish this

    • A lot of reasons why we haven’t, but I may very well throw something at the blog sooner rather then later 🙂 Any requests?

      • I dunno, maybe Goofy or Simba

  2. Any character would be cool I guess

  3. Doesn’t look like a lot of the characters have moves that can combo into each other. Is that intentional or is the game meant to be played more defensively

    • I mentioned this in a response down below, but I figured it would work here just as well so I decided to copy and paste it:

A lot of the characters will have more traditional movesets akin to Peter Pan, but in the case of those 3 characters, traditional movesets just really don’t work. Oogie is sort of a Snake/Bowser hybrid in that he has the heavy hits of a character like Bowser but he has to focus that power through traps and whatnot. Stromboli rewards the players who are able to successfully survive/maintain their presence on the stage through strings and trap defense with a fast and powerful killing moves. Basil might be due for a buff but I think he focuses more on buffing himself to become a viable character.

Obviously, characters with more potential in terms of physical attacks (i.e. Aladdin, Beast, Tarzan) will have more “feasible” movesets in terms of competitive gameplay. The hypothetical DR engine is slanted more towards defensive combat/poking holes through the enemy’s defense simply because of how many Disney characters we have that wouldn’t contribute to more traditional Smash sets – I can’t imagine characters like Pooh or Cruella Deville would be combo monsters, can you?

Characters like that have also been written first simply -because- they’re more fun to write. While writing for Simba would be more feasible in terms of contributing to a metagame and a roster, it’s also far more fun to describe how a quirky character like Oogie would masterfully manipulate his opponents as opposed to “Simba paws in front of himself for a quick jab combo”, y’know?

      • Oh, I see what you’re saying. Cool. I’m glad you’re having fun writing.

      • I was worried because I didn’t think these defensive movesets would contribute to exciting gameplay. At least, it wouldn’t be fun to watch.

  4. I can just imagine it… This page has every single name highlighted in red with their respective moves. One day.

    • Yeah, it would be awesome to see that

  5. DO ANDY’S TOYS!!

    • Potato Head and Slinky Dog are done! Just making Buzz Lightyear and Woody to round them out 🙂

      • YES!

  6. I happened to stumble upon this site yesterday, and you authors have some great stuff going on. I wanted to give you some of my thoughts on what I’ve looked at so far.

-Minnie Mouse should be cut from the roster. I don’t think she has a lot that she could really add to the game. She should be replaced with another character, perhaps Pocahontas, Fairy Godmother, or Merida.

-Similar to one of the posts above me, several of the characters’ movesets seem to lack any potential combos. Stromboli, Oogie Boogie, and Basil come to mind. However, Peter Pan looks like he has good combo potential with his moves. What was your overall idea for the metagame of this game?

-Jack Sparrow should be added to the roster. A compromising art style would have to be found, but I think a 2-D, cartoonish look for all the characters and stages would look nice.

Well, that’s what I have for now. I’m pretty busy in my life now, but it was nice that I managed to find this site.

    • Haha wow! How are you guys all finding the site? I’ll try to get to everybody here asap but this one was nipping at me the most.

      – I absolutely agree, I feel like making her an alternate costume of Mickey’s similar to Bowser Junior’s variants in Smash would be excellent but at the same time I don’t know how confident I’d be in adding any of those characters. Pocahontas was in an early cut of the roster but I couldn’t figure out much to do with her outside help from animal buddies, which Snow White would have. Fairy Godmother is basically Merlin but with pumpkin effects. Sully and Mike as a duo seem like a more fitting third Pixar rep than Merida, but she also adds a princess rep (we also have a Stinky Pete moveset that was written up before he was cut from the roster that I miiighhttt add if there’s enough interest. maybe as a DLC char?)

      – We toyed around with Jack Sparrow -AND- Mary Poppins for a while, before boiling it down to just Jack before eliminating Jack entirely. We figured it would be best to tackle the major players in terms of Disney canon (i.e. the iconic theme park/cartoon characters and film characters) as opposed to opening a can of worms with trying to squeeze in as many live-action/TV show/Pixar reps as we possibly could. That’s why we only have Darkwing and Andy’s Toys/Incredibles as the Pixar chars atm.

I would be open to putting Jack Sparrow back on the roster if there’s enough interest. Maybe I’ll start a poll or something? Either way, there’s two ways I would approach him. Either he’s more prop-heavy like the other characters, having jars of dirt and other film in-jokes incorporated into his moveset or he’s deliberately more Snake-like: an out-of-place character who’s just fighting with his sword and whatnot because he’s not used to how the world here works.

On that note, since you mentioned it – I imagine all the characters in the game being hand-drawn/2D and the backgrounds being 3D. Similar to Ducktales Remastered.

      • I’m definitely not opposed to the physics engine, I just wanted to see your thought process in a deeper way. So basically, this game focuses on creating a good defense for your own character while breaching through another character’s defense and sorely punishing them for it, right? I like it.

You do have a good point. I see Nintendo’s characters much more capable of traditional combos, but not so much for Disney’s cast of characters.

I completely forgot about Monsters Inc. Sully and Mike deserve a spot somewhere in the game. Also, I like the former of your ideas for Jack Sparrow more.

Man, if you and a team of others don’t actually make this game, someone else sure needs to do so.

  7. Well, the game is definitely based off of Smash Brothers in terms of both physics and movesets. When the team (which has now boiled down to just me) started writing the characters, we always sort of imagined it as a harder hitting Smash Brothers in that virtually everyone has viable follow-ups. Getting hit has a lot more consequences than Smash Bros in that Disney Rumble’s HUD doesn’t display damage percentages to the players, but getting hit can increase the player’s “daze”, which causes them to take more stun from attacks (information on both of those can be found under the info tag). To compensate for this, a lot more of the characters revolve around defense than you would find in a game like Smash. As said, a focus on defense versus pressure also feels natural for the majority of the characters falling under the Disney IP.

When we first wrote the movesets, we also had the idea that most of the stages would be grounded and you’d have to “break through” the walls like you would in Super Smash Bros Brawl’s Home Run Contest, and that most of the characters would not have recovery moves due to this. We scrapped this idea partway done the line, and that can be seen in some movesets (i.e. the actual “recovery” part of Stromboli and Hook’s up specials are tacked on to the end of the moves), as we felt it would be too big a deviation. A lot of the sets reflect that, even though it’s not a part of the game anymore.

Sully and Mike would be optimal for a roster spot should the current roster get significantly trimmed, which will likely happen in the future.

Funnily enough – we found out that there was a scrapped Disney-endorsed Smash Brothers clone after we started writing this! The characters they had in the concept art (minus the Horned King, who I always imagined as the optimal story mode villain) were all characters we had in mind for the roster! That’s where the current banner comes from. Otherwise, there’s unfortunately nothing like this being made. I’m just a mad writer doing this in his free time.

    • Very interesting. I did notice that Stromboli and Hook’s recoveries were not stellar by any means. It definitely sounds like a typical match in this game would be excting for both parties. It seems like the player who thinks steps ahead will usually be the one to take the victory.

What I truly want to commend you on is something I think you have done that Smash has failed to do: Truly making each character different. Hear me out for a sec. I love Smash Bros, and I’m well aware of how each character functions differently than another. I just believe that all the characters “feel” more or less the same at the end of the day, just more varied move animations.

From reading the movesets all of you created, each character was vastly different from the next. No two movesets felt similar to me at all. Peter Pan’s Flying Mode, Oogie Boogie’s die mechanic and his ability to enlarge himself yet fall susceptible to getting his sack torn, Tigger’s jumpy and jittery movements, Jafar’s ability to directly manipulate and control his opponents, Edgar drugging his opponents with soup as he beats the daylights out of them. Every character I’ve seen so far brought a new, magical experience of their own. It is wonderful.

That’s a shame about that scratched Disney fighter. Who knows, ideas are never truly forgotten at Disney, so things may change later down the road. Until then, you need to continue this. I haven’t seen any fangame idea quite like this.

  8. For some reason, I can’t reply to the comment about defensive movesets – so I”ll address that in this one.

The average stage in Rumble is larger than the average Smash stage to accommodate the defensive characters, but it should be said that there are an equal amount of offensive movesets to balance out the gameplay. There’s not really going to be a straight-up “screw traps”-type character, but generally speaking, pretty much every character should possess some ability to get around and evade traps.

    • I just know that defensive play in Smash(mainly Brawl and Smash 4) can be slow and boring to watch. Not very entertaining in general. Approaching becomes harder because the players are afraid of getting punished if their attack is shielded or whiffed. And that’s what the majority of the match becomes: a game of punishing each other for whiffed attacks. It’s not that fun to watch two players go back and forth poking at each other for almost the entire match.

  9. Will you be making movesets of those bonus characters?

    • Yes I will be! They’ll be posted alongside regular characters as well, but won’t have roles in the story mode and whatnot.

      • Will Iron Man have a flight mode like Peter Pan?

  10. That’s fine. I’m pretty interested in Iron Man.

  11. Hey. It’s that guy you were talking to yesterday on the Disney Rumble Chat. I just realized how much work there’s left to do with the site. Assuming you do a character a month, that means it will take four years to get every character up on the website. Combine that with modes, items, fiend dolls, assists, and stages…

If you need help with help with something, feel free to ask me. I think it’s about time I signed up on wordpress.

  12. Dunno who could make it, but it’d be great to see a CSS mock-up of the new roster.

  13. I know a Disney franchise that could use some representation- The Brave Little Toaster. Add in the toaster and the lamp (I’d personally love to see Wittgenstein but I have NO idea how he could be made mobile and have a decent moveset.)

    • BLT is definitely getting some assists and fiends down the line, can’t imagine any being playable

      • What’s Pinnochio moveset like?

  14. I’m guessing this site has gone dormant again? That’s a shame, but I understand.

  15. Wow, nothing since December, that’s a bummer.

  16. could u add baymax from big hero 6 (if he isn’t already)

  17. Froll oand Gaston are alike in that they were prejudiced against those who are different from them and were so obsessed with their female enemies that they couldn’t resist stalking them.

  18. Cruella De Vil (especially the original 1961 version) doesn’t get enough love. I personally think she should be in this. Her smoking could provide cool mid-range attacks, she could slap people silly with those long thin hands of hers, she could use her coat in a variety of ways, from blocking to throws and anything in between. She might not be the most “weaponized” character in the Disney universe, true, but with her larger-than-life persona and unique style she has a lot of potential, especially in a fighting game like this.

If you do decide to complete this project someday, please at least consider adding her. I’ve been wanting to control Cruella De Vil in a video game pretty much ever since I saw 101 Dalmatians.

  19. How would the Cheshire Cat work? I know it says illusion based, but all I can think of him doing is throwing his head and swiping at opponents with his claws.
